In line with the goal of achieving carbon emission reduction targets, Mosaic is anticipating the start of the commercial project signed with Casa dos Ventos, a reference in renewable energy generation and a protagonist in Brazil's energy transition, which foresees the supply of 30 MWm of wind energy over 14 years. The initiative, which was scheduled to start only in 2026, began in December 2024, due to the early closing of the partnership with Casa dos Ventos and the start of operations at the Umari Wind Complex, in Rio Grande do Norte.
Mosaic has globally committed to zeroing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040. To this end, it has been developing various actions across two scopes of activity. The first involves eliminating emissions from the company's productive activities, generated directly; in the second, the company aims to reduce indirect emissions, those generated by electricity consumption.
"With the aim of achieving this goal, we reiterate our commitment to mitigating the effects of climate change by seeking to accelerate the start of the agreement's execution at the end of 2024. We understand the relevance of the business sector in global decarbonization, which is why we seek to do our part to collaborate with this worldwide movement," says Letícia Salles, Mosaic's Energy Transition Manager.
"We are strategic partners of Mosaic in achieving decarbonization goals, and with the anticipation of Umari's commercial operation, which occurred in the first half of this year, it was possible to start this agreement in 2024. This achievement is the result of the tireless work of our team, which has a tradition of delivering projects ahead of schedule," explains Lucas Araripe, executive director of Casa dos Ventos.
The commercial agreement signed between Mosaic and Casa dos Ventos is configured as a pilot project, with the future possibility of expansion, and is aligned with the second scope of action to reduce GHG emissions. This supply of clean energy is equivalent to a reduction of 24.5 thousand tons, or 30% of the company's total atmospheric emissions, referring to the value emitted by 15,705 cars, according to Casa dos Ventos' calculations, considering emission factors from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and average fuel consumption from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The energy produced by the Umari Wind Complex will be allocated to Mosaic's phosphate production units in the country, according to the monthly consumption needs of each unit. With the partnership, Mosaic becomes a self-producer of clean energy. The project will supply 30% of the energy needs contracted by the company between 2024 and 2039.
