Casa dos Ventos, a Brazilian renewable energy company, and Mosaic Fertilizantes, one of the world's largest producers of combined phosphate and potash, have signed a commercial agreement for the supply of 30 MWm of wind energy for 14 years, starting in 2026. This energy will come from the Umari Wind Complex, in Rio Grande do Norte.
Mosaic Fertilizantes is the first in its sector in Brazil to invest in a wind farm. With the partnership, it will become a self-producer of clean energy. The project will supply 30% of the company's contracted energy needs on the grid from 2026 to 2039. The partnership awaits approval from Cade (Administrative Council for Economic Defense). "This partnership is another demonstration of the consistency of our business strategy aligned with our ESG commitment. We are doing everything in our power to limit the impacts of climate change," says Corrine Ricard, president of the company.
The project is part of the company's strategy to become Net Zero by 2040 in scopes 1 (emissions from its own operations, for which it is directly responsible) and 2 (from electricity purchased for its own use), ensuring a reduction of approximately 30% (24.5 thousand tons) of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. "We are proud to represent the fertilizer sector in this pioneering initiative, which represents the transformation our business is undergoing and reinforces development towards more sustainable energy solutions," comments Felipe Klemperer, Vice President of Transformation and Procurement at Mosaic Fertilizantes.
Casa dos Ventos began construction of the Umari Wind Complex last year. The project is located between the municipalities of Monte das Gameleiras, São José do Campestre, Serra de São Bento, and Lagoa D'anta. The complex will have 45 wind turbines and a total power of 202.5 MW, with the capacity to avoid the annual emission of approximately 405 thousand tons of CO2 equivalent into the atmosphere.
"With Umari, we expand our portfolio to offer increasingly clean and competitive energy to clients in various segments. We are honored to support Mosaic Fertilizantes on a leading sustainability journey in its sector. Fertilizer production is of great importance to Brazil, and its energy transition is fundamental for us to achieve a low-carbon economy," points out Lucas Araripe, Director of New Business at Casa dos Ventos.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) highlights the replacement of fossil fuel generation with renewable sources, electrification, and energy efficiency as fundamental for the global community to achieve the decarbonization goals outlined in international treaties. "For this reason, the demand for renewable energy supply has been steadily increasing; in addition to the sustainability aspect, direct supply from quality projects generates economic gain and supply security for consumers," says Araripe.
