In a move that redefines the scale of corporate decarbonization in the country, Grupo Carrefour Brasil, the largest retailer that brings together the Atacadão, Carrefour, and Sam's Club brands, and Casa dos Ventos, a reference in renewable energies, announce a long-term agreement worth R$1 billion. This is the largest PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) for self-production signed by a retailer in Brazil, ensuring that 25% of the company's consumption will be supplied by this model and positioning the Group among the corporate leaders in the energy transition agenda.
The energy will come from the Paraíso Photovoltaic Complex, located in Mato Grosso do Sul. Currently under construction, the project has a total installed capacity of 640 megawatts (MW), of which 240 MW will be dedicated exclusively to the operations of Grupo Carrefour Brasil, with an expected start in 2027 and a duration of 10 years.
"As electricity is the company's second largest operating expense, this agreement marks a significant advance in Grupo Carrefour Brasil's energy transition strategy. The initiative ensures clean, predictable, and competitive energy for an important portion of our consumption, reinforcing our commitment to decarbonization, operational efficiency, and the generation of long-term sustainable value for the company and our customers. The project also contributes directly to meeting our public goals of operating with 100% electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and achieving scope 1 and 2 reduction targets of approximately 60% by the end of the decade," states Rodrigo Monteiro, Purchasing Manager at Grupo Carrefour Brasil.
The contractual model ensures greater budgetary predictability and protection against energy market volatilities, in addition to directly contributing to the reduction of the company's carbon footprint. The project's structuring relied on strategic and financial consulting from CELA (Clean Energy LatinAmerica), a specialized advisory in the renewable energy sector.
The partnership is not just a commercial transaction; it is proof that energy transformation is advantageous for companies in any sector of the economy. We are transforming the energy matrix of a retail giant, delivering competitiveness at scale through a customized solution that combines low cost and positive environmental value
states Lucas Araripe, executive director of Casa dos Ventos.
Global and Local Synergy
The contract also represents the strengthening of a global alliance. The joint venture between Casa dos Ventos and TotalEnergies allowed the existing relationship between TotalEnergies and the Carrefour Group in France to be scaled to a highly relevant structural project in Brazil.
"We seek to combine Casa dos Ventos' asset expertise and Grupo Carrefour Brasil's capillarity to generate maximum operational value. This synergy allows the Group not only to achieve its ESG goals but to do so with a logistical and financial efficiency that only a robust self-production model like Paraíso can offer," highlights Thibault Sabatier, Director of Synergies at Casa dos Ventos.
