Meet public climate goals by controlling the company's second-largest operating expense
Electric energy was the Carrefour Brasil Group's second-largest operating expense, a retailer present in the country for over 50 years, a leader in the food sector, with over 700 points of sale in all states and the Federal District. The company had public goals to operate with 100% electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by approximately 60% by the end of the decade.
To advance these goals with budgetary predictability and protection against energy market volatility, the Group needed a scalable solution compatible with the size of its operation.
Self-production PPA with 240 MW dedicated at the Paraíso Photovoltaic Complex, in Mato Grosso do Sul
The Carrefour Brasil Group and Casa dos Ventos signed a long-term agreement worth R$1 billion, structured as a self-production PPA — the largest ever signed by a retailer in Brazil. The structuring was advised by CELA (Clean Energy Latin America).
As electricity is the company's second-largest operating expense, this agreement marks a significant advance in the Carrefour Brasil Group's energy transition strategy [...] reinforcing our commitment to decarbonization, operational efficiency, and the generation of sustainable long-term value.
Says Rodrigo Monteiro, Purchasing Manager for Grupo Carrefour Brasil.
The energy comes from the Paraíso Photovoltaic Complex, in Mato Grosso do Sul, currently under construction, with 640 MW of total capacity, of which 240 MW will be dedicated to the Group's operations, expected to start at the end of 2027.
This synergy allows the Group not only to achieve its ESG goals but to do so with a logistical and financial efficiency that only a robust self-production model like Paraíso's can offer
Reports Thibault Sabatier, Director of Synergies at Casa dos Ventos.
The agreement also represents the strengthening of a global alliance: the joint venture between Casa dos Ventos and TotalEnergies enabled the existing relationship between TotalEnergies and Grupo Carrefour in France to be scaled up to a project in Brazil.
The partnership is not just a commercial transaction; it is proof that energy transformation is advantageous for companies in any sector of the economy.
States Lucas Araripe, executive director of Casa dos Ventos.
