To be the first company in the fertilizer sector in Brazil to contract wind energy and advance towards the Net Zero goal by 2040
Mosaic Fertilizantes was the first in its sector in Brazil to consider investing in a wind farm, a sector that, until then, had no history of such contracts in the country. The company was part of the strategy to become Net Zero by 2040 in scopes 1 and 2, and needed a solution that would guarantee a significant portion of its energy consumption from renewable sources, measurably reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
We are proud to represent the fertilizer sector in this pioneering initiative, which represents the transformation our business is undergoing and reinforces development towards more sustainable energy solutions.
At the time, Felipe Klemperer, Vice President of Transformation and Procurement at Mosaic Fertilizantes, summarized the sector's challenge.
55 MWm of wind energy supplying 30% of Mosaic's grid consumption, from 2026 to 2039, by the Umari and Serra do Tigre Complexes
Casa dos Ventos and Mosaic Fertilizantes signed a commercial agreement for the supply of 55 MWm of wind energy, starting in 2026, from the Umari and Serra do Tigre Wind Complex, in Rio Grande do Norte.
With Umari, we expand our portfolio to offer increasingly clean and competitive energy to clients in various segments. We are honored to support Mosaic Fertilizantes on a leading sustainability journey in its sector. Fertilizer production is of great importance to Brazil, and its energy transition is fundamental for us to achieve a low-carbon economy.
Says Lucas Araripe, executive director of Casa dos Ventos.
With the partnership, Mosaic Fertilizantes became a self-producer of clean energy, with the project supplying 30% of the contracted energy needs by the company on the grid, from 2026 to 2039. "This partnership is another demonstration of the consistency of our business strategy aligned with our ESG commitment. We are doing everything in our power to limit the impacts of climate change.
Reiterates Corrine Ricard, president of Mosaic Fertilizantes.
Pioneering in the sector: first wind energy contract for fertilizers in Brazil, 55 MWm for 15 years and 30% of renewable grid consumption from 2026 to 2039
- 55 MWm of wind energy contracted for 15 years;
- First contract of its kind in the fertilizer sector in Brazil;
- First contract signed in 2022 with energy from the Umari Wind Complex and in 2025 a new contract with the Serra do Tigre Complex, both in Rio Grande do Norte;
- Direct progress towards Mosaic's goal of Net Zero by 2040 (scopes 1 and 2).
For this reason, the demand for renewable energy supply has been increasing; in addition to the sustainability aspect, direct supply from quality projects generates economic gain and supply security for consumers.
Says Lucas Araripe.
