The agreement represents the largest contract of the Danish manufacturer’s history in Brazil

Casa dos Ventos, one of the pioneers and largest investors in the development of wind projects in Brazil, has signed a contract with Vestas, the global leader in the production of wind turbines, to supply 106 V150-4.2 MW wind turbines to the Rio do Vento complex, located in the Rio Grande do Norte state, in Brazil. In addition to the supply of wind turbines, Vestas will be responsible for the O&M service of the equipment for 20 years in the energy availability modality - AOM5000.

The nacelles will be manufactured in Vestas’ facility in Ceará, while the blades and towers will also be produced locally in accordance with the rules of FINAME II of the National Development Bank (BNDES). The project raises the number of orders from Vestas of the V150-4.2 MW in Brazil to 1,508 MW just eight months after the company announced plans to produce the turbine model in Ceará.

This is the second agreement between Casa dos Ventos and Vestas in less than a year, totaling 596.4 MW in signed contracts. In 2018, the companies signed 151 MW in 36 turbines of the same model for the Folha Larga complex, located in Bahia state. This is the largest contract of the Danish manufacturer since the beginning of its operations in Brazil and the largest agreement of supply of wind turbines already signed by the Brazilian developer.

"The wind resource in Rio do Vento is extremely differentiated and among the best in the world. This required us to look for the best available technology for the project and we are convinced that the Vestas’ solution allows us to extract the maximum energy from this region", says Lucas Araripe, Casa dos Ventos' new business director.

The V150-4.2 MW model is one of the most modern and efficient solutions of the Danish company. “We are very proud to have been chosen for such a great project. It is the biggest order ever received by Vestas in Brazil and also the one that has allowed us to reach 1.5 GW of order intake for this model in only 8 months. Our platform demonstrates its ability to provide the most competitive LCoE (Levelized Cost of Energy), as well as its perfect fit for Brazil’s wind profile”, explains Rogério Zampronha, president of Vestas in Brazil and LATAM South. “This is key to bring business case certainty. And for Rio do Vento, the turbine V150-4.2 MW will be provided with towers designed specifically for the wind profile of the region", he assesses.

The Rio do Vento project will become one of the largest wind energy complexes in the world and even has capacity for expansion and hybridization through the insertion of other sources. The project is already born with 445.2 MW and is expected to double, reaching an installed capacity of 950 MW. "In addition, we are scaling a photovoltaic plant to benefit from the existing infrastructure", says the Casa dos Ventos’ executive.

With an investment of approximately R$ 2.4 billion, the first phase of the project is expected to start commercial operation in the second half of 2021. In its total capacity, the wind farm will produce enough energy to supply more than 1 million homes.

Free market model

Although not very widespread in Brazil, countries such as the United States and several others in Europe have a large number of companies that are gradually acquiring renewable energy for their operations. As a pioneer, Casa dos Ventos announced this year, through a project in Bahia, the largest long-term energy supply contract for a wind farm with an end consumer in Brazil.

Seeking to expand its performance in this model, the company presents with Rio do Vento the possibility of serving several clients, given the size of the project. "The economies of scale stemming from the greatness of the venture, combined with the quality of the region's wind, make the energy of this project very competitive for our potential consumers", explains Lucas Araripe.

The viability of ventures in the free environment has gained traction in the company's strategy. "We have sought to customize solutions and help large companies consume energy in the most efficient and sustainable way possible. In addition to the Rio do Vento wind farm, we are developing new partnerships due to our extensive portfolio of projects in the Northeast of the country", he concludes.
